In hard-water areas, traditional elements lose efficiency over time, and eventually burn out. Because XTEND elements are made from stainless-steel and PTC ceramic chips:
- XTEND elements wont lose efficiency or burn out.
- If your XTEND element is heating too slowly, it can be removed, cleaned and replaced.
- As watershedding becomes the normal, XTEND elements will solve a growing issue.

How does it work?
Standard elements are made from coiled wire covered in a metal alloy. They will always draw a set amount of power. As the limescale builds, more and more of this power is wasted, the cost of heating increases. Eventually they can’t distribute enough heat, fail, and need to be replaced.
XTEND elements are made from PTC (positive-temperature coefficient) ceramic chips, protected by a marine-grade stainless-steel casing. The key attribute of PTC is that as the internal temperature increases, the power drawn decreases. When the temperature gets near the maximum set point, the power drawn drops exponentially, until no power is used.
What this means is the following:
- XTEND elements match the power drawn with the rate of heat transfer.
- This always keeps the elements at maximum possible efficiency.
- If the element is exposed to air, the element reaches the maximum temperature and stops drawing power. After some minutes it will cool enough to draw a little bit, then switch off again. We call this a ‘dry-burn’ cycle and XTEND elements are tested to over 5,000 cycles.
- This means you can take an XTEND element out of a broken geyser, unharmed, clean it and put it in the new geyser.
The attributes above are the reason that a 2kW XTEND element can replace a 3kW standard element and heat at around the same rate. This is good for savings and for solar.
